Match Reports 2006 - 2007

s6001225Old Leamingtonians Ladies celebrated their first title in over a decade on Sunday.

With a 5-15 away win against Whitchurch on Sunday, Old Leams have left their closest rivals in Midlands 2 four points behind. Both teams officially still have a match to play but Old Leams are out of reach for rivals Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The title could not come at a more fitting time: Not only does the Ladies’ section celebrate its 20th Anniversary, they are also parting with their coach, Tim Burden, who has coached the team for the past three years. In addition to this, Captain Christie Honor who has lead the team to two 3rd places and this year’s league title, is stepping down as Captain and Vice-Captain Kelly McLeod, who has been with the club since its Premiership days in the 90’s, is retiring.

Head Coach Tim Burden was elated with the result, saying: “We have worked so hard for this over the past 3 years. I have seen the squad improve enormously, especially in this past season. They have so much potential and I am happy to be able to leave the team with a great future ahead of them. I am very proud of them.”

Water logged pitches and cancellations meant that Old Leams ladies had not played or trained for 3 weeks before the start of this match. After a period of re-adjusting to each other, the team picked up where they left off against newcastle 3 weeks ago: a hard fought, well deserved win that sees them climb to tsecond place in the Midlands 2 table with a match in hand. On top of that, they managed to keep their opposition from scoring.

With 4 matches to go (Oxford, Greyhounds (twice) and Whitchurch again), the battle for the championship is still wide open in Midlands 2.

OLs at wet National 7s
p1010066.jpgRain, rain, wind & more rain didn’t stop the Old Leamingtonian Ladies from competing in the England RFUW National 7’s tournament the last bank holiday weekend in May.

Kicking off the tournament for OL’s against Waterloo, new captain Danni Benge lead the team in some awesome defensive work. The line was held for at least 5 minutes of the first half before the Prem 2 team penetrated & scored. In the 2nd half they ran in two more tries but OL’s kept their heads high & were pleased with the standard of the defence they had maintained.
