OLs U8s – Broad St

This Sunday winter appeared with a vengeance but, despite being thoroughly soaked and chilled, the Under 8s put in two splendid performances against a well prepared Broadstreet. The OL under 8s fielded three teams but due to the atrocious weather, and the fact that Broadstreet brought minimal numbers, only two matches were actually played with honours shared evenly. Well done to those players that supported throughout.

1st XV - Claverdon: 48 - 0 Print E-mail

Seven tries were sprinkled through this comprehensive Warwickshire Shield win for Leamingtonians against game but outplayed villagers.
The home club used the match to field an experimental line-up, resting several key regulars and bringing in players knocking on the first team door. The tie also enabled three players to join the fray from the bench after recovering from long-term injuries.
To their credit, Claverdon never gave in but they rarely threatened going forward against opponents boasting suprior skills and fitness. Twenty four points were collected in each half with Leamingtonians denied an even clearer domination by a referee mostly unhappy with their scrummaging. He awarded Claverdon several penalties after finding fault with the home front five's merciless domination. Popular opinion, from the Leamingtonian supporters at least, was that he got it mostly wrong.
Scrum-half Mark Foley started the ball rolling with a penalty inside 10 minutes and further scores came at regular intervals of a match accompanied by a driving wind which did its best to disrupt flowing movement.
Jamie Brown notched the opening try with the in-form Foley successful with the first of five conversions. Back row forwards Benoit Raymond -- the Frenchman enjoyed a fine 80 minutes -- and Luke Staton provided the pack with try successes, with some excellent back play resulting in further touch downs for fly-half Brown, winger Tom Secher (2) and full-back Ian Maul.

We wish David Sims well and a speedy recovery

Kings Norton - 1st XV: 11 - 23 Print E-mail

From the kick off Kings Norton, helped by a following wind, pressured the OL’s defence and despite desperate defence the home side recycled the ball on a number of occasions resulting in an opening try wide out on the right of the field after only three minutes play. 5 – 0. The conversion attempt was missed.  Kings Norton continued to apply pressure to the OL’s and it was only resolute defence that prevented further scoring.

After 20 minutes of mainly Kings Norton domination the home team was awarded a penalty and increased the score to 8-0.

After this the visitors began to gain a foothold on the game and from a high kick ahead into the home goal area, the full back was beaten by an awkward bounce allowing Alec Pain to touch down. Celebrations were short lived as the match official awarded a 22 meter drop out much to amazement of both sides and most spectators. Despite protestations from the visitors the try remained disallowed.  Just prior to half time a converted long range penalty gave the home side a half time lead of 11 -  0.

Under 7s - Rugby Lions Print E-mail

OLs took enough U7 players to field 2 teams against Rugby Lion's one with a total of 6 substitutes. This resulted in two matches with 3 substitutes in the second half of each. Our lads played well (apart from missing a lot of tags which Rachel has vowed to work on in training) and scored 4 tries in each match. Unfortunately Rugby Lions scored 5 in the first match and 6 in the second.
