1st XV v Southam: 32-0 (League) Print E-mail

In the end OL’s came out comfortable winners in this local derby game but for the first hour the home side made hard work of overcoming the visitors. The game concentrated on a forward battle with Southam providing a stiff challenge to the home side in set pieces but generally coming off second best in the loose. OL’s appeared reluctant to use the speed and direct running of the three quarters during the first half of the game, but when the ball was thrown wide a neat move saw full back Rob Ridler coming into the line and feeding speedy winger Steven Dealtry who outpaced the opposition to cross over near the posts. A missed conversion followed and the score remained 5 - 0 until half time.

The second half saw the home side playing with wind advantage and on the hour another smart three quarters move saw the ball fed wide providing space for Dealtry to again outpace the Southam defence to score his second try. The visitors were then subjected to intense pressure from OL’s and further tries followed at regular intervals from captain Luke Staton, flankers Liam Jones and Greg Williams, and a final score from centre Jamie Brown. Rob Marr added one conversion.

This was another good all round performance from OL’s but the habit of kicking away possession remains a fault in the OL’s  game plan when other positive options are available with such speedy young three quarters at the teams disposal.

Captain Luke Staton enjoyed a fine game as did centre Jamie Brown but all players showed good commitment on what was an extremely cold day. OL’s next match is the rearranged fixture at Pershore on 7th February, kick off 2.15pm.

Extra XV v Southam: 55-7 (Away) Print E-mail

The Extras bounced back from last week’s defeat over at Camp Hill with a resounding victory over a struggling Southam second string. The Extras displayed the ruthlessness which saw them as 72-0 victors in the previous fixture, and all though Southam played much better this time round, the Extras were the better side by a country mile....

Now there were lots of tries here, and as I don’t have the benefit of video replay this time around I may have the order wrong and some of the details may be leaning further towards fiction than fact, but you try remembering how 9 tries were scored!

First try was defiantly Ian Maull (I think....). The outside centre collected a pass after repeated OL’s incursions on the Southam defensive line left gaps out wide. Ian found one such gap and scampered through like a little terrier. Mark Bisset got four conversions today and I think he got this one, though it must be said that as all conversions were actually drop goals, this was an impressive feat.

Next try went to the aforementioned Mark Bisset. Mark’s personal tally against Southam this season was 29 before the game, so you can imagine that these guys were less than looking forward to playing against him again. Marks first of his brace occurred shortly after Ian Maull had opened the scoring. Dudley collected a loose ball from a Southam scrum, skinned one covering tackler before releasing Bisset. Mark rounded the remaining defender with ease and touched down under the posts.

Ian Maull scored again (I’m reasonably sure this was when he did), though the details escape me so let your imagination run wild as to how he did it. Mark probably converted this one as well.

Try four I distinctly remember; Luke Cobb, gallivanting second rower extraordinaire found himself out in the backs (those of us who know him well will be unsurprised to hear he was there), he collected a kick and set off for the Southam try line from forty meters or so out. Seeing the defence making it’s way over to tackle him, Cobby cleverly drew his man and offloaded to Richard “Loreal; because I’m worth it” Linfield. The floppy haired full back cut a sublime angle and touched down for what I believe was his first try for the Extras this season.

The try’s in the second half has a slightly more individual flavour to them. Paul Brown, terroriser of many a front row, battered his way through some incredibly stupid Southam defenders, (I mean really; trying to tackle Browny high? ARE YOU INSANE????) touching down from short range.

Today saw the debut of two new OL’s players. Sam Forrest and Ted Goener made their first appearances in the stripes of Gold and Blue. Sam Forrest scored the try his performance merited; the lanky Kiwi making a half dozen cracking runs and making far more break downs than he had any right to as a member of the front row. Sam’s try came after the pack had made good headway through the middle, offloading out of tackles as they went.

Mark Bisset scored his second, taking his personal points tally against Southam to 47 (Yes, forty seven!), making his way around the outside after collecting an Alex Morgan pass. I am fairly certain that Southam will be happy to NEVER see Mark again. It should be mentioned at this point that Aaron Dudley had a crack at the drop goals after a couple of misses, and was successful with his attempt.

Raj Bahey then added a try of his won. The scrum was a fairly hotly contested area all game, and it was after a five meter scrum was driven back that CJ was able to pick up and bash through the fly half to score.

The final try of the game goes to Aaron Dudley. Following good work by Luke Cobb, Chris Bishop was unable to make the line, being tackled just short. Fortunately, Dudley was around to finish the job in the corner with some serious stretching.

All in all, a good return for the effort put into the game. There were many positives, though as pointed out by a few in the bar afterwards it’s hard to be objective when the score line is as one sided as it appears. There were good bits, and some bad. Our concentration slipped a couple of times, and Southam did score a good try pouncing on a loose ball and kicking through. There were good periods of play when we didn’t succumb to white line fever, and these periods produced nine tries.

Barcode "Man of the Match" goes to Sam Forrest for a great overall performance on his debut; though honorable mentions should also go to Paul Brown, Ted Goener (especially for putting up with a bloody nose courtesy of Mr. Forrest..), Mark Bisset, Alex Morgan, Ian Maull and Richard Linfield.

Not bad gentlemen, now let’s do it to the Trinity Guild......

3rd XV v Rugby St Andrews: 14-14 Print E-mail

A slow start by OLs enabled the quick youthful backs of Rugby St Andrews to run in 2 converted tries. Sound defence kept out any further scores before half-time. A rousing team talk saw OLs return to the fray all fired up. Sound tactical kicking enabled OLs to camp in the Rugby St Andrews half.  A period of continuous pressure led to an excellent backs move culminating in full back Rod Capp scoring his first try for the club.  Further pressure led to a forwards penalty move being apparently held up over the goalline but stand off Chris Joyner nimbly peeled off with the ball in hand to power over the try line. Paul Towey converted both tries. OLs almost squeezed a win in the final minute with a penalty kick just floating wide. This performance and comeback was yet another example of the gtreat fighting spirit currently resident in the 3rd team.

The future of touring with OLs?

Rugby vs Beach Rugby vs No rugby?

This year you may have noticed that the Senior Men do not have a tour planned. Reasons are at least twofold

a)      no one willing to organise,

b)      the  Club Chairman keen that we do not have one this season

Note that the Minis, Juniors and Ladies have various tours planned and in hand. There is the opportunity to enter a Beach Rugby tournament in Newquay in the summer. Is anyone interested in finding out more? Anyone interested in organising?

If the players want a tour next year then someone needs to step forward to help organise it. What do you want?

Priorities for Club Development

– all constructive comments welcomed

– last year the emphasis from the players was a) on Coaching from within the club, and b) the development of the Gym for indoor training. Captains Corner

The season is half over, we're 6 points adrift in the League and we’re assured of not being relegated. The Leagues are being reorganised and it is important to finish as high up as possible. Please come training on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays at 7.00 sharp.

.....we lie top of Warwickshire League 2. We are also second in the 2nd XV Merit Table. All in all this is something of a good season so far. We have played entertaining rugby and aside from one or two games I can safely say the lads have come off the pitch having given their all. So let’s finish as strongly as we started.

This is near enough the half way point to the season, so let’s have a look back and have a brief (yes brief) look at what’s happened. First things first, the Extra 1st XV (not the Second XV) have managed to go 19 games with 14 wins, 1 draw and only 4 losses. In there was an 11 match winning spree, ending with defeat to a strong Broadstreet 2nd XV in the Warwickshire 2nd XV Cup.  We have scored a grand total of 99 tries so far, and my hope is that as you are reading this we will be about to add to this count.

At the moment we stand as being the most successful team in the club. We know that this is partly because we have played against some sides where there has been a gulf in ability, but the games that matter more are the games where we have had to work hard to get the win we want.

The nature of the beast that is second team Rugby is that you don’t get to put out a regular team. There has never been a game where the previous week’s team has played again the following week; so credit to these guys for rolling with so many punches.

As it stands, we lie top of Warwickshire League 2. We are also second in the 2nd XV Merit Table. All in all this is something of a good season so far. We have played entertaining rugby and asides one or two games I can safely say the lads have come off the pitch having given their all. So let’s finish as strongly as we started

Aaron Dudley, "Extras" XV Captain

Just a few words from the cutting edge of sports journalism to dispel any misconceptions that club members may have had about the Third team’s season so far.

Despite losing more games than we have won there is no truth in the rumour that we are trying to re-dress the balance by foul means or fair.  However we do feel that following the recent fine win over Shottery when the opposition were bolstered by 10 second half subs from Wellesbourne that this should count as two victories.

Despite the mature, refined assembly of good looking 40 and 50 plus year olds in the side we do have an ongoing youth policy.  We aim to pick at least one youth per game, after all who is going to remember the score line when we get back to the club, or even the way back!

Despite the wonderful array of fixtures we have played this season against first teams, 2nd teams, veteran sides strengthened by Leicester academy backs we are still on talking terms with the fixture secretary.  Many of the words may be unrepeatable and we are still trying to find out who upset Mr. R. from amongst our ranks.

Despite rumours to the contrary we do have a training policy.  There is photographic evidence that one of our members did attend a session.  However we do not wish to commit ourselves to such rigorous exercise as the individual concerned sustained injury immediately afterwards and has not played since.

On a serious note we are having an enjoyable season.  We have a great bunch of players who never let the team down.  There is a positive team spirit with everyone giving 100% for each other.

Come and join the cause.
