Extras XV v Keresley: 61-0 Print E-mail

There is no other way to present this result other than as the score line makes obvious; total Old Leamingtonian dominance. To be fair to Keresley, the majority of them did not give up and kept at it. But there was only one team in this. With 11 tries unanswered, this is going to be a long report so get comfy.....

First try goes to centre Howard Wicks. Veteran scrum half Andy Hall took a quick tap penalty inside the Keresley 22 and fed the backs line. The ball was shipped out of contact and eventually Howard crashed over in the opposite corner. Returning fly half Jamie Brown was to face a tough day in front of the posts with a fierce wind making kicking duties an onerous task; conversion missed but, oh well, onto the next one.

frontrowbliss.jpgThe second goes to one Nick Bennett (that’s NICK BENNETT, with two N’s and two T’s); rampaging hooker extraordinaire. The plucky number 2 timed his arrival from a scrum to perfection and smashed over from short range taking 5 Keresley players with him. Well done big man. No conversion this time.

The third goes to Alex Morgan, taking a crash ball from outside centre and majestically skinning the Keresley backline, plonking the ball over in the corner. Again, no joy with the conversion but Jamie was getting closer.....

15-0 and twenty minutes gone; this was going to be a long day for Keresley.

The fourth goes to Jack Jones, scoring his first try of the season in the corner after some delightful interchange between back row and back line. Again, Jamie was unsuccessful with the conversion but one was bound to go over sooner or later.

By now it was obvious that there was always going to be space on the outside of this Keresley backline. But, showing that OL’s have more than one element to their game plan, Captain and blindside flanker Liam Jones touched down for the first of his brace after Andy Hall spoiled at the base of a Keresley scrum. The skipper was left with the simplest of touchdowns from a distance of around about thirty centimetres. No conversion again, but this was his closest yet.

offbrownygoes.jpgObviously fed up of not getting in on the points, Jamie Brown added a try of his own in the 33rd minute. The fly half threw an extravagant and loopy pass to his outside centre before looping around to collect from Jack Jones. He touched down in the corner and gave himself another easy conversion attempt. Perhaps unsurprisingly he missed this, but never mind.

The final try of the half goes to Howard Wickes. The hefty centre burst onto a pass from Jamie Brown and brushed aside some tired tackling from the Keresley backline, sprinting in from his own half and thoughtfully touching down under the post. Jamie Brown got his conversion, much to the delight of the totally supportive and helpfully encouraging crowd.

37-0 the half time score and OL’s were just getting started.

Number 8 was another forwards try scored from a set line out move. The delicate Chris Bartlett scored the simplest of touchdowns in the corner, thoroughly annoyed that there was nobody left in the defensive line for him to run through. Bless.

Liam Jones added the ninth, taking the ball from a quick tap penalty and passing through a weak defensive line. Jamie Brown scored another conversion.

The changes were rung at this point and OL’s took all of two minutes to regroup before scoring again. Desperate to get in on the action, Paul Salvin collected a long pass from Jack Jones and powered around the outside to score. Try number ten. Tom Hyam, on for a knackered Jamie Brown, added a conversion.

The final try goes to Howard Wickes, sealing his hat trick. Alex Morgan expertly drew his man before popping to Howard and leaving the centre with the easiest of run-in’s.

barcodelogo.jpgMan of the match goes to Chris Clapham. The lanky openside was the workhorse to the flair and power of Liam and CJ in the back row. This ‘holy’ trinity had the roam of the pitch and did not disappoint. Nick Bennett deserves mention for winning ball against the head seemingly at will in the scrums. "Barcode" DoD award goes to Liam Jones for deliberately dropping the ball and avoiding the dreaded penalty of buying a jug of beer. More could be mentioned but this is a long report and I suspect many of you are losing interest now.....

The good thing about this result is that it shows the clinical ruthlessness that will serve OL’s well in the future. The points were all scored through hard work and team play, not through an over reliance on individual brilliance. More points could have been scored, but concentration levels are hard to maintain in such circumstances as these. We know that sterner tests lie ahead for us and there is not a member of this side who will rest on their laurels. For the statisticians amongst you it is now 8 games unbeaten, with 271 points and 47 tries scored against 77 points and 12 tries scored against. As has been said before, and as will be said again; this is not a team that will back down. Southam beware.......

1st XV v Veyseyans: 13-19 (Away) Print E-mail

Two well taken tries following defensive errors by Old Leams either side of half time spoiled what otherwise was a far improved performance from the young  OL’s team.  In a game that was dominated for long periods by the OL’s pack and completely dominated by a match official who succeeded in disrupting the play of both sides by his many confusing decisions, mainly in favour of the home team, that brought promising moves to an abrupt end, spoiling what would have been a far better game and a more likely winning result for the visitors.

The game had opened with the OL’s forwards completely dominating the Veseyan front five providing good ball for the speedy backs.  One such move saw the ball won, spun along the length of the three quarters to see a fine try scored in the corner and converted from wide out by Adam Canning.

Two penalties converted by the home team saw the score at 6 – 7 for most of the first half but with half time approaching an error behind the OL’s goal line saw the ball turned over and a rolling maul saw Veseyan’s Samoan international number 8 forced over for a try.  A further penalty right on the stroke of the half time whistle saw Veseyan’s increase their lead to 14 – 7 at the interval.

The second half saw OL’s playing with the wind at their backs and repeated incursions into the Veseyans 22 metre area resulted in the home side committing fouls from which Canning added two more penalty conversions.  With the score at 14 – 13 the advantage passed to OL’s but despite constant pressure and good forward play OL’s failed to add to their tally. The second of the two bad defensive errors late in the game provided Veseyan’s with a scoring opportunity that they took, moving the score to 19 – 13 and despite constant pressure in the last 10 minutes OL’s were unable to create a clear cut chance to reply.

OL’s performance was far improved from those of previous weeks and had it not been for the match official a far different result might well have been achieved.

A well contested encounter saw OL Third XV come from behind on three occasions to eventually run out with a pleasing victory. Early pressure from Old Eds large pack saw them cross for a try. OLs replied with a fine sprint from his own 22 by Rich Linfield. Old Eds swift winger sped in for two tries but OLs fighting spirit saw excellent tries from Greg Williams, Robin Durrant following a fine kick and chase by Kier Edmunds, and then a great winner from Damon Golding. Chris Joyner added three important conversions to ensure a fine 26-21 victory

U19 Colts v Nuneaton: 0-39 (Away) Print E-mail

OL Colts travelled to Nuneaton with a minimum squad of 15, two of which were carrying injuries and with only one recognised Prop. A selection of Props were given to OL's throughout the game by the 23 man squad of Nuneaton.

The game began with Nuneaton quickly scoring 3 tries by securing the ball through their forwards and full use of the backs to run in the tries.  At this point in the game Nuneaton sensed they were on for a huge score, however OL's started to play with more determination by not allowing their heads to drop.  At half time the score was 27 - 0.

Throughout the second half OL's continued to hold Nuneaton with excellent defensive work, particularly by Eddie Prudoe who was the man of the match and the Smith brothers, Tom and Rob.  OL's also made a number of impressive attacking moves with the backs combining well.  OL's finished the game strongly with all players giving maximum effort, unfortunately resulting in further injuries with Tom Hyam having to retire from play with a broken front tooth.

The referee, had an excellent game, maintaining a fast flowing game. He commented on how well the OL's kept going and were unfortunate not to have scored a try
