OLs 35 (Jake Byrne 3 tries and 5 conversions, Stelios Tzirki, James Perkins) – Stratford 31

As expected Stratford turned up with a large and strong squad to play an OLs team depleted by illness.  Stratford kindly offered us a player to make up the numbers and a magnificent game of rugby ensued with each team scoring 5 tries, but OLs coming out on top with a 100% conversion rate.  Up against a strong and well drilled pack, OLs struggled in the first third of the game, but then started to use their nous by trying to keep the ball away from mauls and through tactical kicking managed to keep Stratford deep in their own half for long periods of the game.  This was an excellent team performance with players who are relatively new to the game stepping up to the mark in a very physical challenge combined with some committed, skilful and intelligent play from the ‘older heads’ in the team.

Broad Street 7 – OLs 28 (James Perkins 2, Rory Sinnott, 2 tries and 4 conversions)

Despite heavy conditions, as usual suffering a size and weight disadvantage and going behind to a first minute interception try, OL’s turned in an excellent performance playing to their strengths by getting quick ball to the backs and running out comfortable 4-try to 1 winners with a brace apiece from James Perkins and Rory Sinnott, all of which were duly converted by Rory. The forwards more than held their own against bigger opposition and there was excellent defensive tackling combined with some tremendous flowing back play all the more impressive given the cold and very heavy conditions. Excellent all round team performance.

Old Coventrians 28 - OLs 14 (Matthew Panton, Liam Wilson, Jake Byrne 2 conversions)

OL’s went down to their first defeat of the season against a physically stronger and well drilled OC’s side. Playing conditions of a tight pitch and extremely muddy conditions did not help OL’s play to the strengths of their open attacking style. Credit is due to the boys though who eventually got to grips with their opponents and the conditions to come from 28-0 down to eventually go down 28-14 and finish the stronger of the two sides. Overall a good team performance.
