Yet another tough fixture for the Thirds against Old Northamptonians who were strengthened by 10 second half substitutes from their fixtureless Second team! OLs however competed strongly throughout and the team’s fighting spirit and defensive powers were to the fore right to the final whistle,
The visitors settled quickly and OLs conceded two early tries to the considerably larger back row of ONs. OLs raised their game and stormed back with an excellent try by Murray Styles after slick interpassing between forwards and backs. The second half saw an evenly fought contest with the only score being a converted try for the visitors. OLs finished strongly pressurising the opposition try line but could not quite force the deserved break through. Special mention goes to Ricky Kular after an immense contribution in both defence and attack.

Home game, Half time 7-5
OL's were forced to defend for the opening exchanges of the game and after a period of sustained pressure Newbold colts scored the first try which was not converted and a score of 0-5 remained for a long period of the first half. Following a passage of good attacking rugby, Tom Smith scored a try between the posts which was successfully converted by Tom Hyam. The game continued to be very tightly contested with little being given away by either side resulting in a half time score of 7-5.
The second half began with two further replacements to the OL's line up making a total of five player changes, three players being injured. As the game continued Newbold became ill disciplined resulting in a penalty being awarded, Tom Hyam added three points making the score 10-5. A Newbold player was red carded but they continued to demonstrate good endeavour and scored a converted try resulting in them taking the lead 10-12. With 13 minutes remaining OL's showed courage and good team spirit with the backs kicking well to put pressure on the Newbold defence. These tactics worked well with a penalty awarded to OL's to secure a further 3 points again converted by Tom Hyam. The final minutes were extremely tense but OL's held on resulting in a well deserved win 13-12.
Well done to all the team for a splendid effort both on the pitch and in training in recent weeks. The team was awarded 'Man of the Match' for their magnificent effort.

The same first weekend of february saw eight OLs turn out for the development team for a triangular fixtgure against Barker Butts and newly formed Bourneville - the full team from BB were too strong by far for our inexperienced team with 3 players making their debut. However, Christian and Theo expecially showed great determation and despite a heavy defeat, score not kept, we left with our heads held high. Tackle of the match goes to Brian who ran down a BB player for a try saving tackle in only his first match - what a prospect for the future.
The second match showed us up against a real mix of U9s and u10s from Bournville - with the aid of a Bournville player the boys worked tirelessly, the highlight being a thumping run the length of the field from Jonas leading to a corner flag score, proud dad leaping from the touchline - the final score was 10-10, great stuff.
Special mention to new boys Brian, William, Conrad who did marvellously well –Don’t worry boys…warmer weekends to come!

A busy weekend of
Rugby
on the 1st of February saw the U9s squad split with half travelling away to Rugby Lions and the remainder playing at the Crofts to facr Barker Butts and Bournville.
The boys who travelled played three games against a strong Rugby Lions side and they put in what can only be described as a stunning performance in the first two games before the cold and injuries (Benedict Lloyd-broken hand, Oliver Wallis- knocks) took their toll. In bitterly cold conditions the forwards and backs linked up, strong rucking and good passing saw them overcome the opposition. Despite the loss of players those that remained played with heart, spirit and skill. The lure of the ‘mars bar best tackle prize’ was sufficient to ensure some creditable tackling. Sadly Andy Bailey had eaten the prize before it was awarded……
The official scores are as follows:
game 1; OLs 5 (Kai Bailey) Rugby Lions 0
game 2; OLs 20 (George Smith, Kai Bailey, Will Johnson, Rory Holland) Rugby Lions 5
game 3; OLs 10 (Kai Bailey, Lewis King) Rugby Lions 0

This was a match that OL’s should have won. From the kick off they attacked Bedworth and the joint table toppers were subjected to a constant level of pressure that deserved some reward but after 25 minutes of mainly defensive rugby Bedworth were awarded a penalty from their first real attacking foray into the OL’s territory. The kick was converted to give Bedworth an undeserved lead. The game levelled out from this point in the first half and neither side was able to alter the scoring, although OL’s missed two difficult penalty attempts. Half time score remained at 3 – 0 in Bedworth’s favour.
The second half began like the first with OL’s exerting all the pressure on the Bedworth defences but unable to break through a resolute defensive rearguard. As in the first half Bedworth was awarded a penalty from almost their first attacking move after 10 minutes of the second half which was converted to extend the lead to 6 points.
OL’s responded with further attacking rugby causing Bedworth to infringe but attempts at long range penalties only resulted in one conversion from scrum half Mark Foley to reduce the deficit. Bedworth remained under pressure for long periods in the second half and following a fine break from Foley who was stopped just short of the line, a concentrated follow up effort from the forwards saw second row Chris Bartlett forced over wide out for a well deserved try. The conversion attempt failed but the score gave OL’s a deserved lead at 8 points to 6 entering the last quarter.
Despite constant pressure on the Bedworth defences the visitors held firm and with less than 10 minutes to go were awarded a long range penalty which was converted to restore the lead. OL’s pressure failed to achieve any further points and the final score remained 8 – 9. Bedworth were awarded 4 kickable penalties of which three were converted. OL’s were awarded 5 goal attempts of which one was converted and this was the difference between the teams. OL’s deserved to win a game that was a fine example of local rugby with both teams giving their all and despite the loss this was one of the OL’s better displays of the season, this despite a number of first choice players either missing from the team or playing out of position.
Next week OL’s visit Ledbury.
