U10s - OLs Festival Report Print E-mail

OLs U10s turned out two teams on a glorious spring day, hosting matches against Rugby Lions, Stourbridge and Evesham.

The less experienced Reds battled hard throughout the day, and were unlucky to win only one match with a single try against Evesham (scored by Sam Hill). A fortunate break allowed Rugby Lions to score a late try and win 10 - 5 (again Sam scored for Reds), and Stourbridge were given a tremendous game before winning 10 - 0.

The Blues started with a titanic struggle against Stourbridge, with the match being evenly contested until halftime, as OLs turned round 10 - 5 in front. The Blues turned up the heat in the second half, running in three further tries, to win by 25 -10. A quck turnaround meabt that Blues were up against Lions immediately, and again another nailbiter ensued! Blues soon got to grips with Lions planned moves, and although there was no score at halftime, OLs moved ahead after the break, edging home by 10 - 5. After lunch, a dozy Blues side made an indifferent start against Evesham, and were lucky to be two tries to the good at the half. Evesham hit back, but Ols had shaken off their torpor and scored again, winning 15- 0.

With the Trophy won, Blues played some carefree rugby in the in-house battle, scoring six tries against a valiant but tiring Reds team.

Try scorers for Blues : George Hawkes (3), James McSharry (3), Josh Allen (4), Kieran Brophy (3), Will Fawcett (2) and Will Button.

U17 Colts v Alcester U18 Colts: 12-10 (Away) Print E-mail

An early impressive start by OLs failed to produce any points, with Alcester gaining the spoils in the first half resulting in two tries.

The second half saw OLs playing with the slope advantage. This created many scoring opportunities with No. 8 Rob Smith following up a break from Ryan Collins to go over the line under the post, Collins converting.

Minutes later an impressive backs move involving Tom Eales and Adam Thompson saw the latter score and a try awarded by the referee only to be disallowed by the ref because the home side’s linesman appealed!!!! Justice was done however when a magic, fleet footed 40 yard run by Ryan Collins evaded many despairing tackles to score the winning try.

1st XV v Pershore: 12-22 (League) Print E-mail

A much better display from OLs but ultimately disappointing as Pershore resisted the aggression of the OLs pack to close the game out in the last ten minutes. OLs began strongly and could easily have scored twice in the first 5 minutes as winger Paul Salvin sliced through a brittle defence on both wings only for the final pass to go astray. Pershore looked dangerous every time they touched the ball and sure enough, having repulsed several sequences of OL offence they interpassed brilliantly from their own 22 to score in the corner. 0 -5

OLs returned to the attack and pressed strongly for another 10 minutes but again Pershore soaked up the pressure, eventually clearing their lines, and from their next attack from the back of a lineout  bullocked over to double the score. 0 – 10

The OLs pack were tireless and at scrummage and lineout they exerted pressure on their counterparts which eventually had to tell with skipper Luke Staton chipping over the Pershore defence, outrunning them to collect his own kick to score wideout. No conversion, 5 - 10 and halftime beckoned.

OLs started the second half like an express train with centre David Canning scoring under the posts inside 30 seconds, converted by flyhalf Jamie Brown. For the next 20 minutes OLs steam-rollered their way through the Pershore pack providing countless opportunities to press home the advantage but all were squandered by backs and forwards alike. The wind was not used as an extra man to put pressure on the creaking Pershore defence and eventually OLs stopped to draw breath, allowing Pershore an opportunity to counter attack which they did with relish scoring under the posts to retake the lead. 12 - 17. Three real attacks in 65 minutes and 3 scores!

OLs tried to raise their game again but were unable to put together a telling attack and in the last seconds Pershore scored again. Overall some outstanding personal contributions but  OLs lost to the better drilled team.

Extras v Rugby St Andrews: 17-5 (Away) Print E-mail

Old Leamingtonians Extra 1st XV made it three games without losing in the sun, wind and rain of Rugby.  The score line may read as an Old Leamingtonian victory, but honesty needs to be respected here. This was a Warwickshire league 2 fixture and the depleted extras ended up with only 12 players able to take to the field. No blame is laid here; we are not a professional club and as a result things like this are bound to happen every now and again. In an effort to avoid a similar encounter to that of Broadstreet 3rd’s a few weeks ago, and due to the fact that Rugby St. Andrews wanted to keep their 3 substitutes to maximise their chances of beating us (we had after all tonked them 46-5 earlier on in the season) I decided to concede the result initially so that St. Andrews would lend us a couple of players. Still with me? Basically, as pointed out by returning Welsh/Slovenian lock Greg Williams “Well done boys, we’ve lost before we’ve started!”

FINALLY, we got to play a game of rugby. Old Leams began strongly, returning the infield kicks of St. Andrews with some excellent counter running from Rich Linfield, hair a flopping as he went. I am certain he would be faster with shorter hair.....

Anyway, the extras were easily the more dominant team in the first half. St. Andrews conceded a penalty which stand in kicker Aaron Dudley was unable to convert into points. However, this was remedied shortly afterwards when Damon Golding crashed over from short range following a break made by Jake Batsford. The back row forward burrowed his way over from the resulting ruck, leaving Dudley with the touchline conversion. By sheer fluke the conversion actually went over, much to the disbelief of the Gold and Blue’s. No one was more surprised than the kicker himself!

Alas, St. Andrews scored their only try of the game shortly afterwards. Some weak tackling allowed their nuisance of a backrow forward space to come through the defensive line, brushing off the covering tackler with a hearty slap to the chops.

But wait, there’s more! Jake Batsford then scored arguably the try of the game. Greg Williams, fresh from the Slovenian forests and recently revealing himself as a cunning linguist with regards to the language, made a great break from the back of a ruck. He trampled over several tacklers before offloading to the galloping Batsford. A quick phase or two inside the St. Andrews 22 saw the Leeds University player end up ball in hand and heading for the corner flag. Sadly, Dudley was unable to match his earlier efforts and the try went unconverted.

Old Leamingtonians sought to keep the momentum going while Rugby St. Andrews seemed to be more interested in arguing amongst themselves.

Strong runs from Pat O’Leary, Cawail Wong and Alex Morgan kept the St. Andrews backs busy throughout the game, the second half being no exception. 18 minutes in and Ahhhhh!lex Morgan capitalised on another Greg Williams-ski break to score. However, as he managed to injure himself in doing so I’m certain the overlap looks like a much better option now.

This was the point where I decided to end the game. We had lost Richard Linfield earlier on in the half, suffering from an ankle injury caused by the weight of his hair. We had now lost Alex Morgan and a few players back to St. Andrews. Now it was 11 vs. 15 and things could have got silly. We are struggling with injuries as a club anyhow, so that was it. Game over!

This was an odd game, one very hard to get into. Good things came from the pack; Greg Williams put asides his 6-nations related misery to play a stormer, Damon Golding didn’t miss a single tackle and looked the complete back rower. Dean Harris made a nuisance of himself all over the pitch, whilst the deceptively athletic Jake Batsford ran riot throughout the day. In the backs, Morgan, O’Leary, Wong and Linfield proved themselves again and again against superior numbers. I am convinced we would have won by an even healthier margin had we have had the full complement of players.

Man of the Match goes to Alex Morgan for a commanding display at 10, though Batsford and Williams ran him close. Special mention must also go to Matthew “Donk” McIntyre for his score in the bar. Only three weeks until the end of the season and the Extras are still the most successful side at the club, wining more games than any other senior side. This is a status worth protecting, bring on the next lot!

U19 Colts v Leamington: 29-7 Print E-mail

OL's Colts were planning to travel to Leicester Vipers however after a late cancellation they were happy to host rivals Leamington . This was the third time of playing each other during the season, the previous two games Leamington won by a small margin.

Early exchanges saw OLs pressure Leamington 's try line and they soon scored a try through good passing along the backs for Liam Wellings to touch down. Leamington forwards responded well and went on to take their first and only try and conversion.

Jake Copper played an excellent captain's game, leading his team and forwards by way of example, offering a strong base to secure ball and allow the backs to run in two further tries by Alex Norman & Tom Smith.

A Leamington player received a yellow card as half time approached with the score at half time 15-7.

The Colts maintained their momentum in the second half, playing much of their attacking rugby through the backs, and another passage of play saw Alex Norman score a second try. Cieran O'Connor who has not played regularly this season demonstrated his skill at fly half by converting a try and followed that by scoring a try himself, Tom Smith duly converted.

This local derby ended with rather too much enthusiasm which resulted in a 30 man brawl with an OL's player being shown a red card. Nevertheless, a good win for OLs.
