Kenilworth Festival - U11 Print E-mail

The U11s maintained their strong finish to the season by winning the Kenilworth Festival, conceding a single try in the process.

A strong squad opened against Atherstone and built up a healthy lead of 26 - 0 by half-time. After the break, momentum was maintained with three further scores, as OLs eased to a win by 46 - 0.

Old adversaries Silhillians were next up and OLs played perhaps their best rugby of the day, with forwards and backs combining to score five excellent tries in a 33 - 0 win.

Hosts Kenilworth were next, and again, strong forward play enabled OLs to dominate, from the off, as Ks were despatched by 40 - 0.

The decider against old adversaries Old Coventrians was a titanic struggle, with OCs defence just about holding OLs at bay. A solitary try for OLs was cancelled out as OCs scored direct from the kick-off as OLs dithered for once. OLs scored again before half-time and dominated a scoreless second-half to ensure a 14 - 7 win.

Try Scorers : Jack Firth (5), Sam Forster, Will Fawcett (3 each), James McSharry, Josh Allen (2 each), George Hawkes, Kieran Brophy, Jake Belcher, Jordi Pocknell and Matthew Sawyer

Conversions : Sam Forster (14), James McSharry (2) and Kyriakos Grammatopoulos

U11s Tour of Devon 2010 Print E-mail

A party of 26 players, plus countless supporters, made the long trek to south Devon on Friday 9 April, for the 3rd annual tour of 'cream tea' country.

Our first match on Saturday was against Torquay Athletic. OLs made the short journey from their HQ to Torquay on a warm, sunny morning, to face the 'tics. Resplendent in tour shirts sponsored by T@lecom Ltd, OLs were soon under pressure as the hosts made a strong start, pinning OLs back in their own half from the kick-off. However, OLs were soon in the ascendancy, with the forwards on top form, supplying plenty of ball for Sam Forster to pull the strings at Fly Half. Six tries were scored before half-time, mostly through scintillating back-play, from Kieran Brophy (2), Jack Firth, James McSharry, Kyriakos Grammatopoulos and Jordi Pocknell, whose try was more direct in approach. Although 'tics never gave up, rugby is a difficult game to play without the ball; Forster converted all six tries as OLs went into the break leading by 42 - 0.

OLs changed their whole line up for the second half, and wounded pride ensured the 'tics were much more competitive after the restart. Indeed they scored first, with a well worked try. Sam Hill's score in the corner, restored OLs dominance, topped off by Kai Bailey's run fro inside his own half, rightly (as it happens!) ignoring his coaches calls to release his backs. The whistle went with Ols winning by 52 - 7.

Sadly a serious injury then struck OLs, as in the 'Lads vs Parents' kick-tennis game, Kirk's brother in law, Steve, suffered a serious leg injury, as he stretched towards the tryline. A couple of diazepam, a trip to A&E, and half-a-dozen pints of cider, proved suitable treatment for Steve's career-ending torn hamstring!

Some of the party crossed the road and spent the afternoon on the beach, whilst a small group of afficionados remained to watch Torquay Athletic battle local rivals Brixham, failing to stave off relegation, mainly through the inability of any of the backs to tackle!

U11s Vs Evesham Print E-mail
Written by Damian Dixon
Monday, 29 March 2010

OLs U11s faced Evesham in a hastily arranged fixture, following Leamington ’s inability to raise a side. It is disappointing that our squad has not been able to test its ability against our local rivals. It is hoped to rearrange this fixture for a midweek evening after Easter.

In the first match aginst Evesham, OLs were slowly out of the traps, and were initially thwarted by a well-organised Evesham defence. By half-time only scrum-half Jack Firth had managed to cross the line, with a trademark run and decisive finish. OLs began to play with more composure after the break and added further tries through Firth and Callum Dixon after a line-out drive from Jordi Pocknell. James McSharry entered the line from full-back to score a beauty and replacement Kieran Brophy finished the scoring. Sam Forster added five conversions to give OLs a rather flattering 35 – 0 win.

OLs rang the changes for the rematch, and again found Evesham in excellent defensive form. Kieran Brophy scored for OLs, but Evesham replied soon after. Harry Gwynne crept over from close range to restore OLs lead, which was increased by Brophy with the final score of the match. McSharry added two conversions and Jack Nixon another as OLs posted a 21 – 5 victory.

Following a slow start, all the squad played well with forwards and backs linking well. Particular mention to debutant Patrick Price, who took to the front row as if he had played there all his life!!

OLs now look forward to their Devon Tour from 9 to 12 April.
