Old Leamingtonians Vets travelled to Stoke Old Boys to play their 2nd XV in windy conditions. Sadly there was no referee resulting in the Vets Julian Carter acting as the man in the middle.
In difficult conditions the Stoke Old Boys started well by pressurising the Vets in the loose resulting in a broken field converted try for them. The OL’s knuckled down and started to dominate the set pieces with the Vets front row getting the better of the scrums and second row Barry Wright doing well in the line out. The Vets camped in the opposing 22 forcing a penalty which was duly converted by Fly Half Chris Joyner. The Stoke Old Boys replied with a try wide out after some sloppy tackling. Good scrum possession and quick hands in the backs saw Centre Cawail Wong set off on a typical mazey run to score a try. With the score 12-10 to the home side at half time the second half was a tense and tight affair. Back row forward for the Vets Steve Cook with fellow loose forwards Luke Turner and Roy Dixon started to get on top of the home side in the loose, however the home side managed to score a well worked try again wide out. The Vets stuck to their task and Centre Rob Bashford forced his way over carrying 3 players to score a well deserved try. A penalty in the last 5 minuets of the game gave the Vets Fly Half Chris Joyner the chance to put the Vets 1 point ahead. The final minutes were a frantic affair with the home side running from every where to try to secure a win, however the Vets hung on for a very well deserved win. Man of the Match was Flanker Steve Cook Final score Old Leamingtonians Veterans 18 – Stoke Old Boys 2nd XV 17 |
