VERY little to choose between these well-matches
sides, but it was visiting Dunlop who left The Crofts with a season's Division
Four West (South) double.
An entertaining game played in good spirit saw both
teams give their all with defences remaining mostly in control on a wet and
windy afternoon when open rugby was mostly a second option.
Leamingtonians made life difficult for themselves
during the first 15 minutes, conceding 12 unnecessary penalties to relinquish
hard-earned territory. It was from one such error that Dunlop took the lead, a
swift counter attack allowing their winger to go over in the corner for an
unconverted try. The visiting kicker then saw a comfortable penalty attempt
squirt wide from in front of the posts.
Playing with greater forward co-ordination than of
late, the home side finally got it together in the shape of fine piece of
opportunism by lock Greg Williams who broke from the back of the maul and struck
down the blindside to level the scores.
Dunlop's defensive resolve was seen at its best
during the opening minutes of the second half when Leamingtonians made desperate
attempts to sneak in front, and when the defining score came it was the city
side who claimed it as their scrum-half boomed over a long range drop
goal.
Again the home side took control in an attempt
to snatch victory, with two late Mark Foley penalties just staying adrift of the
target.
All in all Leamingtonians could consider themselves
hard done by, with Ian Rowley, Ian Mould and late replacement Rajir
Bahey performers of note.
Next game: Keresley (Saturday away).
