Limp Leamingtonians surrendered a 17 points lead in
dismal fashion to gift Evesham the points.
Three excellent tries in the first 20 minutes gave
Leamingtonians the perfect start as they took their hosts to the cleaners with
some smart 15-man rugby. Dave Canning, joining the line at a good angle, went in
under the posts for Adam Canning to convert and CJ Bahey and Jake Batstone then
provided the pack with a two-try salvo.
It all seemed too easy, but individual arrogance
quickly replaced team work to throw Leamingtonians into disarray. Players
tried to go it alone, possession was surrendered and Evesham gradually clicked
into forward gear, a penalty giving them a breakthrough just before the interval
whistle.
The second half then developed into an Evesham
benefit as repeated mistakes, wrong options and a clear lack of team cohesion
saw Leamingtonians concede a flurry of points through poor defence, missed
tackles and a total failure to play to their earlier strength.
Worse still, the visitors even appeared to throw
the towel in. That was the most displeasing aspect of all on an afternoon when
it seemed as though the OL season's end cannot come soon enough. It does on
Saturday, at home to Shipston.
