The Wanderers fielded a changed team from their previous outing which included: a the welcome return to Amarjit Atwal and Oliver Wright; Paul Crawford playing his début game for the club; and four Leamington RFC players who were very welcome after the Wanderers were forced into a reshuffle after last minutes cry offs.

As expected Shottey arrived with a strong squad and good game of rugby ensued. Right from the start the Wanderers front row of Mike Hemming, Roy Dixon and Craig Ellis out scrumaged their opponents and with Lester Hunt snipping around the scrum Shottery were in trouble, and although they had the better of the lineout Shottery were never allowed to establish significantly long periods of dominance during the game. The Wanderers scored the games first try, courtesy of outside centre Simon Davis , converted by Jack Jones with kick from the touch line. With their scrum second best and backs contained by there Wanderers counterparts Shottery’s back row made a number of attacks from the base of the scrum down the blind side, all of which were effectively contained by the Wanderers back row of Dave Morris, Martin Boag and Amarjit Atwal and winger Oliver Wright.

With their powerful scumage, back line looking very dangerous and Amarjit Atwal No 8 making brainstorming runs, the Wanderers were in the ascendancy but, were unable to add to their first half score, often because of handling errors caused by over eagerness. A lapse of concentration towards the end of the half, allowed Shottery to break from their twenty two and despite try saving tackles from Chris Joyner and Mark Cook, Shottery scored a try from subsequent 5m penalty.

Score at half time Old Leamingtonians 7 Shottery 5.

At half time the Wanderers brought on David Ward who made an immediate impact, and with the force with the home side three more tries followed through Mark Cook, Roy Dixon and David Ward, with Stewart Lune kicking one conversion. Despite the score, the Wanderers were made to work for this win with Shottery competing hard throughout the game and threatening during counter attacks.

A special thank you to: Phil Watson (Paddy) who volunteered to referee the game, and to James Robinson, David Ward, Simon Davis and Stewart Lune from Leamington RFC for playing.

Man of the match Amarjit Atwal for just being awesome
