Seven tries were sprinkled through this comprehensive Warwickshire Shield win for Leamingtonians against game but outplayed villagers.
The home club used the match to field an experimental line-up, resting several key regulars and bringing in players knocking on the first team door. The tie also enabled three players to join the fray from the bench after recovering from long-term injuries.
To their credit, Claverdon never gave in but they rarely threatened going forward against opponents boasting suprior skills and fitness. Twenty four points were collected in each half with Leamingtonians denied an even clearer domination by a referee mostly unhappy with their scrummaging. He awarded Claverdon several penalties after finding fault with the home front five's merciless domination. Popular opinion, from the Leamingtonian supporters at least, was that he got it mostly wrong.
Scrum-half Mark Foley started the ball rolling with a penalty inside 10 minutes and further scores came at regular intervals of a match accompanied by a driving wind which did its best to disrupt flowing movement.
Jamie Brown notched the opening try with the in-form Foley successful with the first of five conversions. Back row forwards Benoit Raymond -- the Frenchman enjoyed a fine 80 minutes -- and Luke Staton provided the pack with try successes, with some excellent back play resulting in further touch downs for fly-half Brown, winger Tom Secher (2) and full-back Ian Maul.
We wish David Sims well and a speedy recovery |
