OLs U9s travelled to Old Coventrians on Sunday with a mixed squad of 11 players. Two games were played on a quagmire of a pitch, often in driving rain; given the conditions, the quality of rugby was exceptional.
The first match saw OLs make a strong start using every inch of a wide pitch. The line out work was exceptional as James McSharry score two tries from clean line out ball, and Harry Gwynne halted close to the try line after a strong 30 yard run. OCs responded with a try before halftime, but OLs were not to be denied and eased to a victory by 30 – 5. Other tries came from Bailey Wightman (x2), Josh Allen and Will Fawcett.

The rematch saw a much tighter contest in the first half as conditions continued to deteriorate. Again, defence was excellent, highlighted by Kieran Brophy’s tackle on the wing as he drove his opposite number back 5 yards! Two tries before halftime gave OLs a narrow lead as OCs replied on the whistle. OLs regrouped after the break, began to ruck with more authority and scored two further tries in the last ten minutes to end winners by 20 - 5. Scorers were Will Fawcett (x2), Sennen Scobie and James McSharry.

A frozen group of players were delighted to see the hot chocolate and roast potatoes supplied by our hosts!
