A squad of 21 Under 9s travelled to Alcester for the first fixture of 2008. Despite wind, rain and mud, OLs played some outstanding rugby winning both matches.
The first game saw an OL side with a blend of enthusiasm and experience take on a strong Alcester team. Although tentative at the ruck, the mauling was excellent with Sennen Scobie to the fore; he was justly rewarded with the opening try as OLs led 5 – 0 at half time. Playing down hill in the second half, strong tackling kept Alcester penned on their own line, and eventually a second try was scored by Jack Firth. Further chances were spurned as Alcester defended well, and the home team deserved their consolation try on the full time whistle.
OLs fielded a completely changed team for the rematch, and gave an exhibition of passing, support play and tackling, which was too much for Alcester. Kieran Brophy made some sharp runs, rewarded with two tries, and there were scores for George Hawkes, Bailey Wightman and Will Fawcett. Tries also for Adam Southorn and Tom Smith – their first of the season. Alcester battled throughout and were rewarded with a couple of tries, but OLs ran out convincing winners by 35 -10.
