OLs welcomed a strong squad from Sils on Sunday, for an eagerly anticipated contest against traditionally strong opponents. With our visitors travelling with a squad of 20 plus, an extra pitch was marked, giving all the players plenty of game time. On Pitch 1, OLs hit the straps from the first whistle and dominated all aspects of the game, scoring at regular intervals throughout. The scoring was led by a Sam Beards hat-trick, with a double from Kieran Brophy, and a try each from Callum Dixon and Will Fawcett. A consolation try for Sils, meant the final score was 35 - 5. Meanwhile on Pitch 2, OLs were thwarted by a dogged Sils defence initially, and only had an Alex Smith try to show for early pressure. However a sublime break from Will Button at scrum-half, and a second from Alex, eased OLs to a 15 - 0 win. After a ten minute break allowed players, coaches and spectators to regain their breath, battle recommenced. On Pitch 1, OLs faced Sils other team, and maintained their dominance in a 25 - 0 victory. Tries were shared amongst Josh Allen, George Hawkes, Matthew Sawyer, Harry Gwynne and Kyriakos Grammatopoulos - the last three with their first scores of the season. On Pitch 2, an epic struggle took place as Sils defended magnicently, denying OLs on at least three occasions in the first half with last-ditch tackles. Despite turning round scoreless, OLs did not panic and eventually were rewarded as they drove over the try line through Callum Dixon and Bailey Wightman, who both claimed the score. Sils responded with their best rugby of the day, but OLs held out to earn a 5 - 0 win. Overall a magnificent day for OLs with 16 tries scored and only one conceded against a Sils side who have comfortably had the upper hand in recent seasons. |
