OLs U9s pitched up at Teignmouth over the Easter weekend to provide the curtain-raiser to the home team's annual fixture against Old Merchant Taylors RFC.
![]() The excellent programme announced that Teignmouth U9s had won 14 fixtures out of 16 this season, and it was soon evident from Teign's warm-up that OLs would be in for a hard time. However, OLs have performed strongly all season, particularly since Christmas, and their own pre-match training in front of the packed stand, delighted the large travelling support. OLs started strongly showing excellent rucking and mauling skills coupled with a stout defence. Cory Bailey opened the scoring with his first try of the season, and although Teign's replied, Will Fawcett drove over the line to ensure OLs led at half-time. The pattern continued in the second-half as late arrival Alex Smith scored, only for Teign's to reply with a wonder try. OLs were undaunted as scrum-half Kieran Brophy made a scintillating break from a scrum and stretched out to score in the corner as the Tourists won by 20 - 10. The Teign's coach was not pleased, and his team was fired up for the rematch...
OLs rotated the squad for the second game, and as expected Teign's came out all gun's blazing! Their excellent fly-half pulling the strings once again, finally breached OLs defence after a spell of pressure. OLs replied through Will Fawcett, but Teign's restored their lead with a deserved score as OLs were behind at half-time. OLs used their strong bench in the second half, and were remorseless as Will Fawcett was driven over to score the equalising try, and finally Sennen Scobie edged OLs in front. The last minutes were played deep in Teign's half as OLs maintained their excellent defence, to edge out their hosts 15 - 10 as the final whistle blew!
The mums took the team to the beach to warm down, whilst the dads recovered in the bar! |
