They say that great teams win ugly. And by no stretch of the word that was an ugly win. In a game where the biggest talking point was the sudden changes of weather, neither team set the pitch alight. OL's were more often than not victims of their own best endeavours; instead of playing the simple rugby that has seen this team shine on so many occasions this season, we tried too hard. For some reason things just didn't work. We were untidy around the rucks and over adventurous in our passing. In the teams defense it is always difficult to gain momentum with passive srums, especially as the OL's pack had the measure of their opponents from the off. The 3 points came courtesey of a Paul Towey drop goal, gained after some positive phase play by the OL's forwards. A difficult game to be positive about, but their were positives. The lineout was truly awesome; Woody and Batsford stealing plenty of ball in difficult conditions for the throwers. The OL's centres showed some glimpses of good attacking rugby and nobody can fault the teams defence with big hits flying in around the park. The best thing to come out of this game was that we did not stop trying. It didn't work this time, but it will next saturday. |
