Old Leamingtonians WRFC has a proud history of rugby. The team was set up in 1988 by Helen Ames. In 1993 OL's were in Division 3 and promoted to Premiership in 1994/1995 season! Quite an achievement for a team not even 6 years old.
In 1999 Old Leamingtonians reached the national Cup final which was broadcasted live on Sky Sports. The other Premiership teams were eager to snap up the high quality players so Old Leams were forced to bring in players from the 2nd team. In the end, the club dropped to Midlands 1 and decided to voluntarily drop out of Midlands league 1 into Midlands 2 to be able to build a new team with confidence, ready to get back to where they belong: Competing for the top spot in women's rugby. The team as it is today still has many experienced players, many of whom have represented England in various roles or have played at representative level in the all parts of the countru. Together with an influx of new players, they will form the basis for the future successes of Old Leamingtonians WRFC. Over the next 5 years, the club aims to integrate better with the young girls so that they are ready to join the senior side by the time they are old enough. This will help the team to grow to a higher level with home-grown players with strong local ties. The club offers some of the best facilities in the area with a bar, a gym and 4 playing pitches and 1 training pitch. Old Leamingtonians also has an archery section, a running club, mini and junior sides and 4 men?s teams. There are regular cup and county matches. England Women have trained at our grounds and other representative teams use our great facilities to train on a regular basis. |
