Old Leamingtonians Ladies recently held their 22nd annual awards dinner celebrating the past season and also the retirement of Janine McComiskey. Held at the home of Old Leamingtonians RFC, the Crofts, the 50+ attendees' were entertained by a number of speakers. Outgoing pregnant Captain, Victoria Kerr and Vice May Sly reviewed the highs and lows of the past season. Head Coach Gemma Lewis and Assistant Coach Caz Lambert-Farris discussed the plans for the forthcoming season with Chairwoman Jacqui Meade summing up the season from on and off the pitch. Amongst the evening's highlights was an entertaining speech from Therese Kennedy, ex-OLWRFC and Ireland Women's International player. Several players including CLaire Penna spoke personally about their experiences and tales of playing alongside Janine. The event was also attended by Helen Ames, who founded Old Leamingtonians Ladies RFC in 1988.
The awards section of the evening seeks to recognise those who have shone in the past season and celebrate successes. Mary Sugrue, took two awards home for consistently good performance and attitude as Forward of the Year 2009. On top of losing nearly 8 stone in the past season and embracing a move on the pitch to inside centre- all her past seasons achievements on and off the pitch saw Mary also deservedly voted the team's Player's Player 2009 which was awarded by ex-club Captain Christie Honor. In the backs, outside centre and incoming Captain Hannah Leyland took home Back of the Year 2009 award for attitude, dedication and development of playing ability. Having completed her second season as a player new to rugby Jodie Turpin took the award for Most Improved Player 2009 as she has developed her skills and in turn playing ability continuously over the past season.
As well as celebrating the team successes the night also marked the end of Janine McComiskey's career on the pitch at OLWRFC. She presented the club with a Ladies Captain's Board which will be placed alongside the Men's Team Captain's board in the OLRFC club house. In honour of Janine's retirement we will be holding a testimonial match on the 6th September at the club.
