Old Leamingtonians Ladies Rugby team will be welcoming over 20 players from the past back to the Crofts on Sunday 6th September. The players will be putting their boots back on to take part in a testimonial match in honour of longstanding club member Janine McComiskey (nee Surridge) who retired at the end of last season. After playing at Old Leamingtonians RFC for over 13 years Janine made the decision to retire at the end of last season. Janine first played rugby at Sunderland University and embarked upon her club rugby career at Newbold Rugby Football Club when she moved to Warwickshire in 1993. In 1994 she was spotted by an England coach and was swiftly called up to represent Midlands Division. Coaxed away from Newbold in 1996, the star back row player joined Old Leamingtonians in the Premier league, where her skills and abilities saw her captain the 1st XV in the 98/99 season. This was their most successful season, when they reached the National Cup Final and finished 4th in the Premiership. She continued to represent Midlands until 2000 when she was selected to play in the inaugural Super Fours tournament. She then stepped down from representative rugby to focus on her club. Thirteen seasons after joining the club, Janine’s rugby career has come to an end. She will be sadly missed as there is no doubt that she is one of OLRFC Ladies finest and we look forward to marking the end of such a bright career with a big bang! The day will start at 1.30pm with a tag rugby match from the Comets, followed by a display by the Leamington Sparklers at 2.30pm. The testimonial match will kick off at 3pm followed by BBQ & disco. The free event is open to all and will include the auctioning of a signed England Rugby shirt.
