The Crofts – 4th October 2009
Superb weather greeted our visitors for the first fixture of the season; Old Coventrian’s having filled the cancellation gap left by Berkswell & Balsall Common at short notice. The 2 Match fixture featured ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams:- Match 1 – OL’s ‘A’ vs OC’s ‘A’
An impressive start to the season, open running rugby from the backs was enabled by a dominant forward performance – excellent rucking and mauling supported by a quick service to the backs made sure the linking of play kept the pressure on at all times. Defence was equally well drilled with good field coverage providing little chance for OC’s to make significant yards. Still some work required in ball retention, to prevent occasional loss of possession – but overall a well drilled performance. The final score being 25 – 0, comprising a brace for Luke Green, plus scores for Tom Fawcett, Kai Bailey and Skipper Tom Hoare on his Birthday! Match 2 – OL’s ‘B’ vs OC’s ‘B’
An equally convincing performance from the ‘B’ team showed strength in depth for the U10’s squad even with 8 players unavailable. Forward play was again a feature, some hesitancy at the breakdown being the main reason for more Mauls than Rucks. Stout midfield defence enabled the OL’s line to hold position for most of the match, only one breakthrough from the OC’s resulting in a try for the visitors. The final score being 25 – 5, with two tries for both Alex Witchell and Rory Holland plus one on debut for Alex .
