Old Leamingtonians Veterans played their first game of the 2006/07 season in their customary miss-matched tradition. The Old Leams Vets were please to host Old Wheatleans 1st XV who were in need of opposition to shake the close season cobwebs out.
The match started in a competitive fashion, however the writing was soon on the wall when the Vets fullback, Julian Carter had to make a number of try saving tackles. Eventually the youth and speed of the visitors soon proved superior and they were able to run up a score of 47 unanswered points by half time. The second half was a copy of the first with the Old Wheatleans being in the enviable position of being able to bring on 5 substitutes, all with pace and the exuberance of youth. Old Leamingtonians countered this with the introduction of stalwart prop forward, in his 50,s, Mike Hemming. In an all too rare passage of play that took the Vets in to the opposition 25 meters, the Vets Number 8, Neil Selby was able to force his way over for a try. Praise goes to all the Vets players for sticking to the task and getting the first game of the season under their belts. Final score Old Leamingtonians Veterans 5 – 92 Old Wheatleans 1st XV |
