OLs travelled to Coventry on a bright, sunny morning to play their first fixture of 2010 at Old Coventrians, following the abandonments of previous weeks.
In match one, a strong OLs side, including new signing Jordi Pocknell, made a slow start, and soon found themselves seven points behind. This was the jolt that OLs required and strong forward play secured field position from which Jack Firth and James McSharry scored before half time. Following the break, OLs remained dominant upfront, and further tries were scored from close range by Callum Dixon and Jordi. OLs sealed a comprehensive victory with an excellent move, combining strong forward play and slick handling, as George Hawkes scored in the corner. Sam Forster scored a nap-hand of conversions, as OLs ended winners by 35 - 7. This score was not a fair reflection on OCs efforts, which were redoubled in the rematch. OLs were on the back foot in the set piece, and lost a number of scrums against the feed. Only stout defence repelled OCs, and eventually the ball was worked to Kieran Brophy who skated over for a try, converted by James McSharry. A reshuffled pack, regained the ascendancy after half-time, the only reward coming from a try for George Hawkes, with Kyriakos Grammatopoulos adding the extras in a 14 - 0 victory. OLs travel to Silhillians next Sunday. |
