A late change of fixture meant that the Old Leamingtonians Wanderers had to visit Rugby Welsh 1st. Also, due to the cancellation of the OL veteran’s game, the Wanderers gained a few players who brought a lot of experiences especially  for the young generation aiming to progress to higher levels.

The first twenty minutes of the game saw the Wanderers being unable to neither retain the ball nor defend adequately, which resulted in four uncontested tries from the Rugby Welsh team. But the last part of the first half, the Wanderers regrouped to show that they could play as a unit. The OL’s forward started to dominate in all areas of the game with the backs finishing off the moves.

At half time, the Wanderers trailed only by one score helped by Balli Atwal charging moves from the back of the scrum and a superb display of kicking from Mark Foley who slotted all the convertions from both touchlines.

The second half restarted with Tom O’connor starting as a back row forward, unusal for a hooker, demonstrating a new found pace with some breaks through the Rugby Welsh defence. Further tries were added with the help of Balli Atwal and Nick Bennett, the latter pushing for a five meters try once again a demonstration of new talent to come for the Old Leamingtonians and the future of the club.

Five minutes from the end of the game, Mark foley ran twenty meters along the touchline and dived for a superb try in the corner. With this, the Wanderers finally went ahead on the score sheet with three minutes reamaining. Unfortunatly, straight at the restart, Rugby Welsh kicked the ball into the  Wanderers twenties and a combination of lucky bounce and sleepy defence saw them regaining the lead.

Final score was Old Leamingtonians Wanderers 45 to 1st Rugby Welsh 49.

Man of the match: Balli Atwal.
