Leading 11 – 10 with eight minutes to go in a match that had been mostly dominated by the visitors should have been enough to win the match, but three converted tries in the last eight minutes gave Worcester victory by a score that in no way reflected the balance of the game. Early exchanges saw the OL forwards pressing deep into the Worcester half but failing to take advantage of a number of good chances to open the scoring due to a combination of bad luck and poor finishing. After twenty minutes of defending their line Worcester took advantage of an interception on their own 22 and ran the length of the field to score an unconverted try following a rucked ball on the OL’s goal line.
OLs continued to press forward but met with resolute defence from Worcester, the only reward being a successful penalty converted by Alec Pain. Towards the end of the first period Worcester enjoyed a spell of good pressure in the OLs 22 ending with a second unconverted try. Another Alec Pain penalty near the end of the first half saw the half time score 10 – 6 in Worcester’s favour. The second half followed much the same pattern as the first with OLs continuing to dominate the forward play and spending the greater time in the Worcester half, but apart from a Lee Hardy unconverted try in the corner they had little reward for the pressure. With the score at 11 – 10 the visitors went to sleep and Worcester ran in the three tries almost without a tackle being made. There were very few credits to be taken from this game, the OLs tackling was found wanting and the need to convert pressure on opposition lines into points needs to be worked on. |
